In ‘Think and Grow Rich’ Napoleon Hill cites persistence as the eighth step to riches. He says that “persistence” is to character, what carbon is to steel.” In short, without persistence it is doomed to fail.
The process of success can be briefly stated as follows:
Start with a burning desire, set a goal and then go about fulfilling it with persistence.
The road to achievement Is never a smooth, it zig zags form side to side, with any failure creating a signpost toward achievement and fulfillment. With out the quality of persistence you will be defeated early on in your journey.
Remember though that failure only happens once you’ve given up. The person that continues onwards despite all adversity is learning valuable lessons in each temporary failure that will carry them to the success of fulfilling the goal that has been set.
You should picture that there is a hidden guide, lurking in every goal, who’s job is to test you with all sorts of discouragement.
This guide lets know one taste success until they’ve passed the persistence test. – If you can’t take it, you won’t make the grade.
There are 8 qualities to persistence:
1: Definiteness of purpose – This is the first and most important. It simply means that you must know what you want.
2: Desire: There must be an intense desire, if not, forget it!
3: Self-reliance: This could be described as belief in yourself to succeed.
4: Definiteness of plans: There must be some kind of organized plan.
5: Accurate knowledge: to succeed requires specialist knowledge in any field of endeavour.
6: Cooperation: Help from people with experience in what you are trying to achieve.
7: Willpower: This could be stated as focus.
8: Habit: Persistence is the result of habit. Cultivated habits that will lead you closer to your goal.
Once these qualities are understood persistence can be developed with following:
- A DEFINATE PURPOSE BACKED BY A BURNING DESIRE FOR IT’S FULFILLMENT
- A DEFINATE PLAN EXPRESSED IN CONTINOUS ACTION.
- A MIND CLOSED TIGHTLY TO ALL NEGATIVE INFLUENCE
- A FRIENDLY ALLIANCE WITH ONE OR MORE PERSON WHO WILL ENCOURAGE YOU TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOUR PLAN.
If you can grasp the above statements and internalise them into your daily habits then you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts.
At this point I should bring to your attention some of the major causes of failure: which are:
1: Inability to define what you want.
3: Fear of criticism.
4: Lack of interest in acquiring specialist knowledge.
5: Willingness to blame others.
6:Looking for short cut.
Through Napoleon Hill’s study of hundreds of the worlds greatest achievers he concluded:
“ I found no quality save persistence that even remotely suggested the source of their stupendous achievements.”
He concludes that persistence, concentration of effort, and definiteness of purpose are the major source of achievement.
This is a powerful lesson. I would recommend that you review it regularly.
Good luck and be persistent.
